#Black Lives Matter – Power to the People

Last night, I responded to a FB post with the phrase “Power to the People” as if to indicate that it was time to return the power where it belongs – with the people. Thinking about my response, I realized that the people never lost the power, we just have not exercised it lately.

The power I’m talking about here is our right to vote. Our votes, or lack thereof, put 45 into office. Our votes can take him out and keep him out if we simply fill in a form and check off someone else’s name.

We all know there is strength in numbers but we need those numbers to be strong. If you are of age and can vote but are not registered, go register. Once you’re registered, vote. If you’re older and have trouble getting out, look into absentee voting or arranging for a ride to the polls. Encourage your friends and family to vote and teach the children why it’s so important to exercise this right. Google “Voting Rights in the United States” and you’ll see how we, as a nation, have struggled and protested and improved our ability to vote. Don’t let all this work be in vain. Work for peace. Vote for peace. Your vote can help create peace. A change has got to come. Your vote is key to that change. Now that’s power! Use it wisely.

Check with your town clerk regarding local elections and vote in those. Covid-19 has impacted the primaries but the next presidential election in the US is November 3, 2020. Go here to see when you must be registered in your state to vote. https://www.vote.org/voter-registration-deadlines/. I just brought up the page, clicked on my state (Massachusetts), and signed myself up for absentee voting. It took less than 2 minutes. 2 MINUTES!!!

Be kind. Stay curious.

Ro
